Overview
In this session, we were introduced to the idea of portfolios and how they can be used to display achievements, abilities, and personal growth. A portfolio is more than a collection of documents; it acts as a structured tool for personal and professional development, allowing individuals to present their experiences, values, and qualifications effectively.
The session also emphasized the increasing relevance of digital portfolios, created using platforms like LinkedIn, GitHub, WordPress, and Wix, which help in building a professional online identity.Key Learnings
- A portfolio reflects personal values, skills, education, and individuality, not just credentials.
- It serves multiple purposes, including job seeking, career advancement, freelancing, academic evaluation, and personal branding.
- To create an impactful portfolio, one should:
- Define its main purpose.
- Identify the intended audience.
- Decide on the format (digital or physical).
- Collect and arrange relevant materials.
- Provide explanations or context for each entry.
- Digital platforms such as LinkedIn, Behance, GitHub, Canva, and WordPress simplify the process of creating professional portfolios.
What I Learned
This session completely reshaped my view of portfolios. Earlier, I thought they were simply files of certificates or projects, but I now see them as a meaningful career asset that mirrors my growth, values, and abilities.
The discussion about career-focused and digital portfolios was especially useful, as employers today often assess candidates through their online presence. I now feel encouraged to start creating my own digital portfolio, possibly through LinkedIn or WordPress, where I can feature academic work, certifications, and personal achievements.
Although I currently have a portfolio, after this session, I realized that it is missing some key elements. So I have to work on that to make it a better one.
